
Optiscan has partnered with Pentax in the US$1.2 Bn pa global flexible endoscope market.
Together both companies have collaboratively developed the world’s first flexible endomicroscopes.
The product received regulatory clearances from the FDA in the USA, and the CE Mark for Europe, and was released to the world market on 1 March 2006.
Flexible endoscopes are primarily a diagnostic medical instrument used predominantly in the gastrointestinal tract. The Optiscan / Pentax flexible endomicroscope enables gastroenterologists to image cellular and sub-cellular structures in real time from and beneath the surface of tissue.
At 1,000 times magnification, these images are of approximately 10 times greater magnification than the nearest competitor product.
To introduce Optiscan’s breakthrough technology to the market Pentax have sponsored a series of global clinical trials. These clinical trials have produced excellent results and are demonstrating the clinical efficacy of the flexible endomicroscope. The global flexible endoscope market is highly concentrated and dominated by the three Japanese camera companies; Pentax, Olympus and Fujinon. Combined, these three companies hold about 95 percent of the global market.
