Single optical section of the human oesophagus collected in vivo following the intravenous administration of 10 ml fluorescein sodium (10 mg/ml;). At the cellular level, the luminal surface of the oesophagus is composed of nonkeratinised, stratified squamous epithelium.
Imaging of the distal oesophagus enables observation of the Z-line or the squamocolumnar junction, with regions of columnar epithelium adjacent to regions of squamous epithelium.
